Uncompromising G series design
The FE C 16-35mm T3.1 G introduces a new level of cinematic expression to Sony’s full-frame sensor camera line-up, including the highly acclaimed FX9, VENICE and the new FX6. This lens delivers outstanding corner-to-corner sharpness with advanced E-mount performance and accuracy along with traditional cine lens attributes. Incredibly image quality is achieved with an advanced optical design, including XA lens elements while the constant wide T3.1 (F2.8) aperture and 11-blade circular aperture contribute to gorgeous defocused bokeh.
Traditional cinema lens operability
The FE C 16-35mm T3.1 G brings traditional cinema lens operability with all the advantages high-performance E-mount cameras have to offer. The combination of three-ring operation, including de-clickable IRIS for smooth exposure and depth of field control, direct linear focus ring for precise manual focus and a zoom ring, offer traditional cinema lens experience. The additional benefits of servo zoom, advanced auto-exposure and AI based autofocus technology, including Real-time AF and Real-time Eye AF tracking found on modern E-mount cameras will expand your creative expression and operability in almost any shooting environment.
Extreme aspherical optical design
Two XA (extreme aspherical) elements with extremely high surface precision (better that 0.01-micron) are included and work with three aspherical elements to minimize aberrations that commonly plague wide-angle zooms, effectively controlling distortion, field curvature and astigmatism. The extremely precise XA elements reduce aberration and deliver ultimate corner-to-corner resolution throughout the entire zoom and aperture range.
Constant T3.1 (F2.8) max aperture
Constant T3.1 (F2.8) max aperture maintains exposure and depth of field regardless of the focal range to which you zoom. When changing your aperture to defocus the background, the areas out of the focal plane appear blurred. This ‘bokeh’ effect of the blurred background is enhanced with circular aperture blades used in this lens.
11-blade circular aperture contributes to gorgeous bokeh
When changing your aperture to defocus the background, light sources appear blurred. This ‘bokeh’ effect of the blurred background is enhanced with the 11-blade circular aperture used in this lens. Conventional aperture blades have flat sides creating unappealing, polygonal-shaped defocused points of light. α lenses overcome this problem through a design that keeps the aperture almost perfectly circular from its wide-open setting to when it is closed by 2 stops. Smoother, more natural defocusing can be obtained as a result.
Two Direct Drive Supersonic Wave Motor (DDSSM)
High-resolution cameras demand absolute focus precision. A floating mechanism driven by two DDSSM (Direct Drive Super Sonic Wave Motor) actuators maintains outstanding resolution from infinity to close focus and especially effective when recording motion. DDSSM has the capability to position the large, heavy optical assemblies required by large-aperture lenses with pinpoint precision, offering accurate, fast and quiet autofocus, ideal for content creators working alone, on a gimbal or drone where pulling manual focus is not an option. Manual focus with the DDSSM system is natural and intuitive.
Nano AR Coating
Sony’s original Nano AR Coating technology minimizes flare and ghosting by suppressing internal reflections and maintaining clarity, even in difficult outdoor lighting conditions, for dynamic range that achieves lifelike detail and gradation with advanced camera sensors. This precisely defined regular nano-structure allows accurate light transmission, contributing to high-quality images, more so than with lenses that use coatings with an irregular nano-structure. The reflection suppression characteristic of the Nano AR Coating is superior to conventional anti-reflective coatings, providing a notable improvement in clarity, contrast, and overall image quality.
Dust and moisture resistant for robust reliability
Sony’s standard lens sealing is augmented by a lens mount seal that maximizes resistance to dust and moisture for reliable operation in challenging environmental conditions. Additional details, like rubberized rings that are easy to operate in low temperatures, a customizable focus hold button and a hood lock button, all add up to professional control and convenience.
ED glass minimizes chromatic aberration
Two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements take axial chromatic aberration and chromatic aberration due to differences in magnification out of the picture, maximizing resolution and bokeh while leaving precisely rendered edges with minimal fringing or unnatural coloration.
Instant auto/manual focus selection
Instantly switch between auto and manual focus allowing the camera and lens to focus for you or decide to take control and manually focus on the precise point you chose. The focus ring can easily be moved forward for autofocus or pulled backward to engage manual focus. This unique operation allows the user to switch from autofocus to manual focus directly from the focus ring making the operation quicker and easier than selecting a menu in-camera or a separate Sswitch on the lens housing.
Focus hold button
The focus hold button not only performs its primary function to lock focus when recomposing, but can be customized to a number of other functions depending on your needs. In addition to Focus Hold, custom functions include: Super-35/full-frame select, Picture Profiles, Peaking function, zebra amongst others.
Internal Focus maintains lens dimensions
Only the middle groups of the optical system move to achieve focus, so the overall length of the lens does not change while focusing. This is especially useful when using the lens for video with a matte box, on a gimbal or a drone. In addition, the filter thread at the front of the lens does not rotate, which is convenient if you’re using a polarizing filter.
Fluorine front-element coating
The front lens element features a fluorine coating that helps to prevent dirt and fingerprints from sticking, and makes it easier to wipe dirt and fingerprints away if they become attached to the lens surface. This is a lens that can be used with confidence in a variety of challenging outdoor conditions.
Precise, responsive manual focus
Linear Response MF enables smooth, lag-free manual focus, allowing DPs and camera operators to adjust focus accurately and intuitively. The focus ring offers a 120deg large angle of rotation for finer control, with distance scale markers for consistent focus reset during multiple takes.
Compatible with cinema lens accessories
The FE C 16-35mm T3.1 G has a 0.8mm pitch gear and 114mm lens diameter, which is regarded as the industry standard in cinematography, providing compatibility with a wide range of accessories include matte boxes and follow focus systems.
Detachable servo zoom
The included servo unit with tripod mount provides comfortable fingertip control for smooth, gradual zooms suitable for a slow moving drama or promotional video. Servo and Manual control are switchable by a button on the lens unit, and while set to servo, you can control zoom via camera’s handle or grip zoom. The servo unit can also be detached if preferred, making the lens lighter and more portable.
Fast, accurate autofocus and auto-exposure (AF/AE)
The FE C 16-35mm T3.1 G fully supports the Enhanced Hybrid phase and contrast detection autofocus (AF) and Auto Exposure (AE) capabilities on full-frame camera like the FX9, FX6 and Alpha series. This breakthrough technology allows you to concentrate on framing while the camera and lens work seamlessly together to maintain focus on subjects with shallow depth of field.
