Press the dedicated SOS button (protected under a safety cap on top of the device) and an interactive SOS message is transmitted to Garmin Response? — a 24/7-staffed international emergency assistance coordination center that communicates with you in real time, coordinates with local search and rescue teams, and manages your rescue until help arrives. Unlike one-way emergency beacons that send a distress signal and then go silent, the inReach Messenger Plus maintains a two-way conversation with Garmin Response throughout the emergency, allowing you to describe your situation, report injuries, confirm your location, and receive instructions — now with the ability to send photos and voice descriptions of the scene.

Beyond emergencies, the Messenger Plus keeps you connected to the people who matter. Pair it with the Garmin Messenger™ app on your compatible smartphone to exchange two-way text messages (up to 1,600 characters via the app), send and receive photos and voice messages, participate in group message threads, and share your GPS location via LiveTrack so friends and family can follow your progress on a map in real time. The device's optimized messaging system automatically uses Wi-Fi or your phone's cellular connection when available, then seamlessly switches to the Iridium satellite network when you go beyond cell coverage — you don't have to think about which network you're on.

The inReach Messenger Plus operates fully standalone without a phone. From the device itself, you can send and receive text messages (up to 600 characters), use preset check-in messages (which don't count against your monthly text allotment), trigger SOS, start and stop location tracking, request weather forecasts, and navigate back to your starting point using TracBack® routing — a breadcrumb trail feature that reverses your tracked path and guides you back the way you came. The internal rechargeable lithium battery provides up to 25 days of battery life in 10-minute tracking mode, and up to 600 hours (25 days) in low-power messaging mode with a text or location sent every 10 minutes.
