The 1.2-inch AMOLED touchscreen with 390 × 390 pixel resolution and traditional 5-button controls provides a vibrant, responsive interface with smaller bezels than the previous Forerunner 165 for a modern, refined look. The 43mm fiber-reinforced polymer case is lightweight and comfortable for all-day wear, with 5ATM (50-meter) water resistance for pool and open water swimming. Up to 10 days of battery life in smartwatch mode keeps you going for well over a week between charges, with approximately 7.5 hours in GPS-only mode while streaming music and 6.5 hours in all-systems GNSS with music.

Garmin Pay contactless payments let you stop mid-run for water, a snack, or transit fare and pay from your wrist. The barometric altimeter provides real-time elevation, vertical speed, total ascent/descent, and floors climbed — essential for trail runners and hilly training routes. Open water swimming adds GPS-tracked distance, pace, and stroke data beyond pool-only tracking. Power meter compatibility (ANT+/Bluetooth, including Garmin Vector and Rally), Garmin Cycling Coach adaptive training plans, and smart trainer control make the 170 Music a genuine multi-sport platform.
