Pros: Can produce a good scan once you learn the ropes. Cons: There's a steep learning curve. Other thoughts: The software that comes with the PS 5000 is a generic product. There are some screens that just don't apply, it's not well organized, and there's no help. There are still some screens I don't understand. The manual is just a few small, poorly reproduced B&W pages. Some show how to load magazines that aren't made any more. On the plus side tech support is very helpful and usually quick to respond. User friendly software and a good manual would have been a vast improvement for this scanner. Just a good manual would have helped a lot. There are two magazines still made for it. The black 'compact' magazine can only be used when slides are thin enough to fall out on their own. I didn't know this and wrecked my first scanner when a slide jammed. After a month trying to get #2 to work PIE engineers determined that it had a bad IR channel. Another 2 week round trip to California. #3 wouldn't work until tech support explained that it must be connected to a USB 2.0 port on the back of the computer. No hubs & no USB 3.0. Expect to spend some time with each batch of slides to determine which of the many software settings work best. I've found only the 'Magic Touch' dust removal is needed for Ektachrome. For Kodachrome that plus 'Auto Balance' seems to work. Dust removal works well for both Ektachrome and Kodachrome. The scanner has problems with slot #1 on the 50 slot magazine. Sometimes it just skips it and starts with slot 2. Tech support says they don't know why some do that. Your scan will never be better than the original slide. If you have a Kodachrome 25 slide that was shot with sharp focus in bright sun you'll get a nice scan. If you have an Ektachrome slide or worse yet a brand X slide that was underexposed and out of focus you'll be disappointed. Back when we all shot slides autofocus was only a dream and auto exposure didn't always work as well as we would have liked. When I bought this scanner I dreamed of turning my closet full of carousels into a few archive boxes and lots of nice digital images. After two months I'm finally starting to get there. Would I recommend this to a friend? Only if I had a chance to spend some time with them to show what I've learned and give them my notes.

Improvement over previous models

Pros: Improved over 3650 model. Slots in the slide tray are slightly wider, which prevents the frequent jamming. Equivalent results with the straight tray (provided) or the circular tray (optional). Cons: Does jam sometimes, especially with older slide mounts that are a little puffed up from moisture and time. Software provided isn't the easiest to use, requires a brief learning curve. Other thoughts: You need this if you're doing a lot of slides!

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend to a friend

Pros: ....Works better on singles & to work good on slides...they need to be in almost 'mint' condition...;) Cons: ....can occasionally jam....and when that happens a few times too many...it's time to use 'single mode'...ONLY... ;) Other thoughts: [...]
