    Sony FX5 Cinema Line Full-Frame Camera Body - ILME-FX5B

    Product Description:

The Sony FX5 (ILME-FX5) is a groundbreaking full-frame Cinema Line camera that brings features previously reserved for Sony's $20,000+ VENICE 2 and BURANO flagships — including Open Gate recording and internal X-OCN 16-bit RAW — into a compact, portable body. Built around a newly developed 16.6-megapixel fully stacked Exmor RS back-illuminated CMOS sensor paired with the latest BIONZ XR2 processor and dedicated AI processing unit, the FX5 delivers 15+ stops of dynamic range in S-Log3, triple base ISO (800 / 4000 / 12800), 5K recording at up to 60fps, 4K at up to 120fps, and FHD at up to 240fps — establishing a new performance benchmark for Cinema Line cameras in this class.

The fully stacked sensor architecture is a critical upgrade over the FX3's non-stacked design. Stacked sensors read out dramatically faster, which directly translates to reduced rolling shutter distortion — one of the most visually destructive artifacts in motion picture acquisition, and one of the most frequent complaints about the FX3. The 16.6-megapixel resolution is deliberately modest by 2026 standards: fewer, larger photosites on a full-frame sensor capture more light per pixel, which is what enables the triple base ISO performance and the 15+ stops of dynamic range that define the FX5's cinematic image quality. The sensor delivers full-pixel readout in 3:2 Open Gate mode — a first for any Sony FX-series camera — plus 17:9, 16:9, and Super 35mm crop modes.

Internal X-OCN recording is the feature that compresses the distance between the FX5 and Sony's flagship cinema cameras to nearly zero. X-OCN (eXtended tonal range Original Camera Negative) is Sony's proprietary 16-bit scene-linear RAW format, recording 65,536 tonal gradations per color channel — 64 times the tonal resolution of 10-bit ProRes. Previously available only on the VENICE 2 and BURANO, X-OCN on the FX5 provides maximum flexibility in color grading, exposure correction, and post-production manipulation at bitrates that are practical for independent filmmakers and small production houses. Three quality levels are available: LT, C1, and C2.

The triple base ISO system (800 / 4000 / 12800) provides three distinct native sensitivity settings, each with minimal noise at its base level. Dual Gain shooting mode further expands dynamic range options. Together, these tools give cinematographers unprecedented control over exposure and noise performance across an enormous range of lighting conditions — from bright daylight exteriors to extremely dark interior and night scenes — without the image-degrading noise that plagues cameras pushed beyond their native sensitivity.

AI-powered autofocus uses the BIONZ XR2's dedicated AI processing unit for pose-estimation-based Real-time Tracking across all subject types: humans, animals, birds, and vehicles. The system intelligently identifies and tracks subjects with the kind of advanced recognition that Sony has refined across its Alpha mirrorless ecosystem, now optimized for cinema workflows where focus accuracy during continuous shooting is non-negotiable.

The 3.5-inch approximately 2.76-million-dot 4-axis multi-angle touchscreen provides the monitoring canvas, while Sony's CineAlta-style interface with the "Big 6" menu system brings the same operational layout trusted by VENICE and BURANO operators. Built-in monitoring tools include false color, waveform, vectorscope, focus map, histogram, zebras, and peaking. 5-axis in-body image stabilization with Active and Dynamic Active modes, dual CFexpress Type A / SD card slots, dual USB-C ports (USB PD), wired LAN, HDMI, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth round out the connectivity. The NP-SA100 battery (2670 mAh) is rated for approximately 170 minutes of continuous 5K recording. Dust- and moisture-resistant construction with independent-chamber cooling ensures reliable operation in demanding production environments.
