Pros: Well-balanced, clean, clear sound. Foldable with carry pouch. I changed to this pair after 20+ years of using the MDR-7506 which wore out The V6 and 7506 are very similar but, I think the V6 has a bit better bass definition. The frequency range is larger in the V6 than the 7506. I listen mostly to classical music with these and have no regrets. Cons: None Other thoughts: Listen to the Vienna Horns Jurassic Park video on YouTube with these MDR-V6 headphones. Horns are tough to represent well with any headphones This recording sounds great with these headphones.

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend to a friend

We purchased our first set of Sony MDR V6 headphones in 1991. Since that time we have purchased two additional sets. Using a Sony stereo receiver connected to our iMac, the V6 sound through the receiver is significantly improved over direct connection to the computer. For almost 25 years the V6 has been our preferred headphone.

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend to a friend

I bought my MDR-V6 headphones in the 1980's. I'm not sure of the year but I know it was several years before the internet became a household thing. Through 25 plus years of service these headphones have been nothing but outstanding. They were head and shoulders above the competition when I bought them and they still sound great. I haven't bothered to check what other phones sound like in a while because it's pretty much impossible to best the phones I have. I have other headphones of course but none have the natural sound and complete sound of these Sony phones. They are simply the best. Loudspeakers have improved a lot over that time period but not headphones. I don't see how they could. I think my grandchildren will be listening to these headphones and wondering how Sony got it so right so long ago.

I created an account purely for writing this review, that's how good the V6s are. This product has been on the market for 30 years and are probably the most widely-purchased, budget studio headphone in studios all over. There have been many accounts of this and the 7506 sister-model withstanding over 20 years of use. The only thing is that these earpads only last a few months before they rip and flake, but Beyerdynamic DT250 velour replacements fit perfectly, are reasonably priced, and are much more durable. These headphones were temporarily off the site and with that listing went all of the old reviews, so this first paragraph was meant as a recap. I got my personal pair two years ago and I use them every day and bring them everywhere at college. The V6s are a bit bulky but I am willing to sacrifice portability for sound quality. Despite taking care, my earpads only lasted six months so I upgraded to the aforementioned earpads. I did not hesitate in buying the $20 pads because I knew I'd get my money's worth with the headphones. After two years, the headphones and new earpads are not showing signs of weakening or wear. They are the best headphones I have ever had and this will probably be true for a long time. Value-wise, competition is finally becoming fierce after 30 years but these headphones still hold their own. As I said earlier, the V6s were off the website for a while so I panicked and got another pair lest my current one gives out in the coming years, but it's nice to see that they're back. Sound-wise, these are great. I admit that these are the most expensive headphones I own, but for my purposes, I need not spend any more. From what I've tried at various shops, this price and this quality is hard to match. I don't feel the need to spend twice as much to get a marginal increase in quality, but then again, that's just me. Like I said, the competition is catching up, but it's still extremely rare to find a relatively low-priced studio monitor headphone with this flat of a frequency band. They may seem a tad flat and un-colored compared to other listening-based 'phones and the bass is NOT boosted (I find it gets drowned out on the bus) but the V6s are perfect for their purpose. The high-end response is crystal clear and the sound stage is satisfyingly wide. Sitting in my room alone with the music cranked up, these things really come alive. Thanks for reading my long review. TL;DR - You won't regret buying a pair. Oh, and I happen to have my trusty pair of V6s pounding away as I write this.

28 YEARS OF PRODUCTION MUST MEAN SOMETHING!

I originally purchased these headphones at work back in the summer of 1994. At that time the headphones were already in production for 9 years! The headphones lasted me until 2005 with my oldest son using them on a daily basis. Needless to say by that time they fell apart from abuse. I replaced them with a pair of Grado SR60's which I still use today (after repairing them a few times). I also own various other headphones which I enjoy, but remembered the Sony's as being very robust. Fast forward to a couple weeks ago when I saw the V6's were still for sale!?!? I was like…what? I soon realized Sony was stopping production on these headphones (after 28 years) and had to buy a pair, if just for nostalgia. Right out of the box they brought a smile to my ears, if that's possible…I also own a pair of Audio Technica ATH M50's which have a bit more in the low end but the Sony's hang in there admirably. This is by far the most affordable reference monitoring headphone you can buy…by a long shot. The sound leakage is nominal to the person next to you and the sound quality is flat. Flat in an open sort of way…You can hear the buzz of the overdriven tube stage on a guitar amp if you listen close enough. Voices and woodwinds have plenty of air around them, and you can tell if the vocalist is breathing through their mouth or nose. Yep good stuff… get them while you can and enjoy. Sony has restarted production of these cans after people complained about deleting them from their product line. Thank you Sony for listening to your customers! Buy them...they are that good!

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend to a friend

Best Headphones EVER!!

The Sony MDR-V6 provides deep, rich high quality sound and they are better than competitors that cost over double the price. I even dropped mine into the water once (briefly), pulled them out, let them dry out and they still worked just as well as they always had. I'm not saying all products can withstand that but I was grateful for the quality withstanding a quick water dunk. A friend purchased me a set of "Beats" last Christmas and I gave them back to him because I didn't want him to waste his money. I would have never used them. They weren't even close to (cheap sound) my Sony MDR V6 and it was clear they were only popular because of their marketing campaign. I stuck with my Sony headphones and I do not regret it. Sony in general provides VERY high quality audio equipment. They have their 'entry level' line too but if you are willing to pay just a few percentage points more they quality you receive in return is DEFINITELY worth it. It would take quite a bit to make me change my mind. Sony is always first on my list for electronics in general.
