Impervious to the Elements
For the MKE 2 elements, water is not an issue. It can cope with up to 1 bar of pressure (1 meter for 30 minutes), and reliably records underwater sounds, ready to pick up voices again the very moment it resurfaces.
Wind noise is probably the worst enemy of any outdoor recording, and outdoor sports take wind noise to an extreme level-however, this is no problem at all for the MKE 2 elements. It features a special windshield that reliably protects against wind noise, even when it is wet.
As a GoPro is often mounted to your gear, there is a lot of unwanted rumbling and handling noise. Therefore, the MKE 2 elements includes a custom-made shock mount that reliably protects the microphone from structure-borne noise such as vibrations of the housing. In brief, don't worry about the mic, it will go anywhere your GoPro goes.
As there are no other microphones approved by GoPro (indicated by the label) and there are no other audio companies in that program, it is simply the only existing microphone solution for a HERO camera that allows to record sound while sustaining the sealed protection of the camera. And yes, it does work under water up to 3 feet.
Compatibility
The current model MKE 2 elements is compatible with the large number of HERO4 cameras (both silver and black) sold, but not with the HERO5. It also fits when using the optional HERO4 extended battery.
The GoPro HERO5 camera works completely differently to the HERO4. It has a different microphone input format, audio processing and mechanical dimensions. Based on our ongoing collaboration with GoPro, we are currently working on solutions for the HERO5 camera.
Product Description and Initial Setup
The MKE 2 elements consists of a microphone mounted in an elastic suspension and covered by an innovative, replaceable windscreen. It is part of a back door replacing the original back door which is mounted on every HERO4 camera. The user just switches the doors, plugs the microphone cable to the camera, closes the cabinet and is ready to go. No tools are required, the setup just takes a few seconds.
Sennheiser is a participant in the GoPro development program, providing audio solutions that match the applications of GoPro cameras, and was present at GoPro's very first developers' conference in San Francisco in April 2016.
In January 2017, the Sennheiser MKE 2 elements was approved by GoPro and received the "Works with GoPro" seal of quality.
